2014 Silverado Body Structure

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado will start hitting the streets.  The new model is packed full of new design features that have change the body structure.  Nothing too out of the ordinary, but some areas to take a look at.

To ensure that the new Silverado is up to the challenge, key elements of the updated frame, including the main rails and major cross members, are made from high-strength steel. Hydroforming is used to improve strength and reduce mass of the front of the frame.

The cab structures are all new, and incorporate high strength steel in the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails and rocker panels. Ultra-high-strength steel is used in areas of the rocker panels and underbody in anticipation of new shallow-offset crash tests. In all, about two-thirds of the cab structure is made from high-strength steels.

Crash Recovery System for Android in April!

The very fine folks at Moditech annouced in their latest newsltter that the Crash Recovery System for Android will be availible in April!  The availability of the Crash Recovery System for different hardware platforms is a declared objective of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. This allows our users maximum flexibility in selection of the necessary hardware. Among the CRS editions for different versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Apps for the Apple iPhone and Apple iPad the Crash Recovery System family will soon become two additional members.

Currently, two apps for devices with the operating system Android are in the works. CRS Lite for Android will be specifically designed for users of Android smartphones and will have similar functions as the CRS Lite Edition and iCRS Lite for iPhone. For users of Android Tablet PCs the App CRS Standard for Android is under development, covering similar functions as the CRS and iCRS Standard Editions, joining the vehicle graphics with extensive illustrated background and deactivation information.

2007-2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Body Structure

Just remember, most Subarus are going to made of a ton of Boron and other UHSS.  The Subaru Impreza WRX STi is no different.  Just take a look at all the red colored pieces of the body structure below.

Ford Kuga Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS)

The Ford Kuga has a high amount of Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) that makes up the rigid and lightweight passenger cell. There are defined crush zones that work with the UHSS to maintain the passenger cell during a crash. The pillars are very slim because of the UHSS. Dual phase DP steel is used in the rocker, tunnel, A- and B-pillars.

A high amount of Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) delivers a rigid, yet lightweight passenger cell, providing greater side and frontal impact protection.

Extra strong materials enable window pillars to be very slim. This helps to maximise visibility and enables the option of the large panoramic roof to be fitted. Through the implementation of more dual phase steels – located in the rocker, tunnel, A- and B-pillars – the integrity of the passenger cell has been further improved without significantly adding weight.

The new Ford Kuga builds on a strong heritage and no-compromise approach to safety, refining the Ford Intelligent Protection System (IPS) further through the use of its high strength steel and impact protection advances. IPS is a cohesive system of passive safety features, which work together to maximise occupant protection. This is supported by advanced and comprehensive active safety equipment that positively assists the driver.

Porsche Cayenne Construction body UHSS and Boron

The Cayenne body is a study in advanced high-strength steels. The body is primarily high-strength steel, though the outer quarter panel and rear floor pan are mild steel and the hood and door window frames are aluminum. UHSS is used on the tubular reinforcement in the rocker panels, upper A-pillar reinforcements, inner B-pillar reinforcements, door intrusion beams, a floor pan crossmember between the B-pillars, and the floor pan tunnel. The UHSS inner B-pillar reinforcements and the upper A-pillar reinforcements are transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) 700 steel. The complete lower rails and rocker panel reinforcement tubes are dual-phase (DP) 600 steel. Tailored blanks are used on the outer front and rear rails, roof rails, and the door shells to vary the strength of the steels within the same part. Porsche uses boron-alloyed steel on several vehicles, especially on the door intrusion beams, though there is none on the Cayenne.

2010 Ford Taurus has dual-phase

Getting detailed information out of Ford has not been to successful to date. I am still working on it and hope to have color coded body structure diagrams soon. The first information on the 2010 Ford Taurus post on this is site was short. New information is now available.

The Ford Taurus has dual-phase steel in the vehicle structure, including the inner A-pillar reinforcements, outer B-pillar reinforcements, roof rail and outer A-pillar assembly. The Volvo XC60 integrates safety into the body structure by utilizing ultra high-strength steels (1500 MPa) in the A-posts, B-posts, and floor sill reinforcements.

Just look at that UHSS strength number, 1500 Mpa. Now look at the chart below. That is almost the strong UHSS used today. Good luck out there! Just remember to have a Plan A,B,C etc!

The GM Goodwrench site has finally updated with some new vehicle body structure information. Take a look at the image of the picture below to find where UHSS is used on this vehicle platform.

No surprise that the body side is reinforced with Ultra High Strength and Dual Phase Steel. The Front Floor Panel Reinforcement (10) and Body Side Inner Rocker Panel (11) are made from UHSS. The Body Side Inner Reinforcement (8) and Front Lower Rail (12) are made from Dual Phase steel.

If you take a look at the image below you will see that the B-Pillar reinforcement is made from Dual Phase (DP) 980. Just in case you are wondering where DP 980 ranks in the strength of UHSS take a look at the chart on the Types of Steel (UHSS) post from August.

General Motors is using UHSS in many different areas of the vehicle. Below is an image of the Body Structure of a Chevrolet Malibu. This use of UHSS is called out on the list below:

  • 10. Center Pillar Reinforcement (Ultra High Strength Dual Phase Steel)
  • 11. Rocker Inner Panel (Ultra High Strength Dual Phase Steel)
  • 12. Door Inner Reinforcement Beam (Ultra High Strength Steel)
